Nothing says more about Congress's priorities than the federal budget, and one look shows that young children like Sam are not a priority – they're an afterthought.

Our representatives in Washington should be helping young children get quality pre-k. Instead, they have been shrinking Sam's share of the budget for decades. Congress must change its priorities, but it won't happen without pressure from you!

I urge you to visit a quality pre-kindergarten program back home while Congress recesses this month.  Come see for yourself what a sound investment in our families and future looks like!

Economists, scientists, business leaders, parents, and teachers are talking about pre-k because they all see how quality early childhood education sows the lasting seeds of success.  Visit a center in our state and you, too, will understand how pre-k raises academic achievement and graduation rates, reduces grade repetition and special education needs, and leads to stronger communities.

Unfortunately, Congress is investing a substantially smaller share of the budget than it used to in children's programs like pre-k: our children's share of federal domestic spending has dropped 20 percent since 1960.  Even though much of school success depends on what children learn and how they develop before age five, our youngest learners get crumbs from the federal budget.

Is this the legacy you want to leave behind in our community?  Please, make federal funding of quality pre-k a priority when you return to Washington.  My vote depends on it.
