Thanks for being such a vocal advocate for early education. When I heard your quote about getting "out of the catch-up business," I couldn't have agreed with you more.

Right now, 70 percent of three and four year olds have no access to publicly funded pre-kindergarten programs. When you work with Congress next year to renew and revise our nation's major education law - the Elementary and Secondary Education Act - we hope you and the Obama administration will make pre-k a top priority. Getting all kids ready to learn early is the first step to improving our schools.

In fact, high-quality pre-k must be viewed as an indispensable part of our education system. When early education programs are of high quality, they provide the kinds of positive results that families, communities and policymakers are seeking like improving children's cognitive, social and emotional skills, increasing high school graduation rates and closing the achievement gap. And, in addition to these irrefutable benefits, high-quality early education yields a return of $7 for every dollar invested.
