Stop the Assault on the Pre-K Promise
The Mayor’s proposed budget assaults the pre-k promise we made to our children last year.
Billed as the next phase in the city’s education reform efforts, the DC Council passed and the Mayor signed the Pre-K Enhancement and Expansion Act of 2008. The legislation expands access to and improves the quality of pre-k programs in public schools, charters, and community-based centers to ensure they can effectively prepare our children for school.
According to last year’s fiscal impact statement, the city should allocate $14.1 million in next year’s budget to implement this historic legislation. However, the Mayor proposed just $5.1 million for the legislation – effectively slashing the budget by $9 million and grinding legislative implementation to a halt.
More puzzling and infuriating - the proposed budget provides limited expansion to a half dozen programs in select DCPS schools while excluding charter schools and community-based organizations all together.
SEND THE MESSAGE BELOW and join us in STOPPING this assault on our children’s future and urge the DC Council to fully-fund the legislation.

Subject: Fully Fund the Pre-K Legislation
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
Last year, you supported sweeping legislation to reform the public education system from the ground up, strengthen tomorrow's workforce, and fuel economic growth by ensuring every three- and four-year-old has access to a high-quality pre-k program.
The Pre-K Enhancement and Expansion Act sought to improve the quality of all existing programs and expand access to all children - across all public schools, charters, and community-based centers. According to last year's fiscal impact statement, the city should allocate $14.1 million in next year's budget to implement this legislation. The Mayor proposed just $5.1 million for the legislation - effectively slashing the budget by $9 million and grinding legislative implementation to a halt.
I urge you to demonstrate your commitment to our children and fully fund the implementation of the pre-k legislation.
Sincerely,
