Funding for Project Headway in Jeopardy

The city is just days away from passing a budget proposal that will reduce funding to the city's only scholarship program for early educators to receive AA or BA degrees. As a result of these cuts, more than 200 teachers currently enrolled in programs like Project Headway will lose scholarship funds and be forced to stop their education. Take action now to demand that city officials restore the funding necessary to allow all more than 200 teachers like YOU to continue their education.

Subject: Don't cut funding for my education

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a currently enrolled student in Project Headway, a professional development program for early education teachers in the District of Columbia.

The proposed FY 2008 DHS ECEA Budget reduces funding to early education professional development programs like Project Headway and places the continuing education of teachers like me in jeopardy. I urge you to find a way to fully fund these programs at FY 2007 funding levels.

Project Headway provides scholarship funding and extensive support for teachers with entry-level early education teaching credentials to progress professionally and academically while pursuing a higher education degree.

At the April 23 Human Services Committee hearing, administration officials confirmed that funding for professional development programs will be reduced significantly. Currently, these programs support over 200+ teachers with scholarships, technical assistance, and credentialing programs. If the budget is passed, then hundreds of teachers will lose support to improve their education.

If we are truly seeking to improve the quality of our city's education system, then why are we weakening programs that seek to strengthen a proven K-12 reform strategy - quality early education for all?

I ask that you work to restore funding for professional development programs and all quality improvement programs to FY 2007 levels.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
