The Legislature adjourned a politically difficult special session after putting the finishing touches on more than $230 million in tax increases to balance the state budget next year ... A third of the money from the tax will be dedicated next year to early childhood programs, including pre-kindergarten.

A national day of protests against education funding cuts began Thursday with generally peaceful rallies ... At Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Carson area, about 50 students gathered in front of the student union carrying signs that proclaimed: "From Pre-K to Ph.D., Let Me Go to School."
